A recent business trip coincided with the Bootie Paris last month, so I had to go. It was a tiny venue, but much fun was had by all. They had a guest from Boston, DJ BC, who was excellent!
We need to burn the mash-up for his "Heard it Through the Grapevine"...to DIE FOR!

help! Good intro site/ link to remixing/mashing?

Any links to a 101 about how to even get a foot in on this stuff?

Like, is it possible to lift instrumentals from a regular source with vocals?

How difficult is it to quantitize(?) , is that the word? what I'm talking about is matching tempos.
is that hard?

What IS the basic setup?

Is it possible to do all this w/out spending 500 dollars on software?
or wading through 500 pages of the history of DJing, which I'm already familiar with.

I'd like to see bedroom djs bloom like mycelium all over the states/ the world but the subject is confusing to many of us little people.
any help is appreciated.

Easily exchange huge files (+ entire folders) with friends

GigaTribe is cool new software that allows you to share specific folders on your computer with friends & family located anywhere there is an internet connection...and it's FREE!

Basically, you allow friends to access specific folders (and therefore files) on your computer which you've chosen to share. They can therefore download files onto their computer and you can do the same from the folders on their computer that they're willing to share. You can even use GigaTribe to access your computer from a remote location (work, etc...).

It's 100% safe (128-bit blowfish encryption, no spyware/adware), you can transfer huge files (no-limit) and it's easy to set up. Furthermore, all exchanges are encrypted, so no one has any way of knowing what you're exchanging with friends. For more info or to download free GigaTribe, go to www.gigatribe.com.

I've noticed that when I'm looking around for remixes/mashups that some (most) of the sites don't work.
Do you know anything about this?

A) Is it because the site in question is in some (legal) trouble and had to quit the link?
B) { Where can I / Can I still } ... get that Portishead mash-up?

Also, thanks to everyone who shared a download or link!
I, literally, know what I'll be doing with the next few years of my life thanks to you.

The latest email from BootieSF says: "Starting in October, we're moving back to second Saturdays!"

Since New Wave City has been doing second Saturdays at DNA, I'm wondering if New Wave City is moving or if Bootie will be doing second Saturdays in some other venue.

Looking for NYC Recommendations

I'll be in NYC from this Thursday through Monday. Anyone in here have any mash-up club recommendations? (I thought I'd go straight to source.)

I'm not finding much on El Interneto... Is there anything? Alternatively, a safe, friendly place to shake it to decent music will do.

Thanks!

"Take the Money and Run" Steve Miller band
"I was a Teenage Werewolf" The Cramps

Ablton announces Live ver. 5.0

Ver 5 supports MP3 and added Automatic Tempo-Matching

Live 5 guarantees instant remix and mash-up gratification. Not only is your music library in MP3 format immediately accessible to Live, but the music also automatically synchronizes to the project tempo. State-of-the-art signal processing automatically tracks the tempo of imported songs and sets Warp Markers for you. This works well not only for electronic music but also for songs with human tempo variations.

this is copy/pasted from the newsletter...

ANNOUNCING LIVE 5

Today, Ableton proudly presents Live 5, the team’s broadest-ever
development effort of their award-winning music software solution, Live.
Live 5 presents a wealth of new features and enhancements that cater to
the musician’s entire musical process – creation, production and
performance.

Version 5 adds our users’ most sought-after features along with an
abundance of innovative new sound-shaping and organizational tools. Most
importantly, Live 5 strengthens every aspect of Live while making the
program more fun and easier to use.

Live 5 includes advanced and creative DAW features to satisfy any audio
professional.

• Clip Freeze serves two purposes: freeing up CPU power and easing the
transfer of projects between computers. Unique to Live 5, “frozen” clips
retain their real-time launch capabilities, allowing for improvisation,
performance or song arrangement. A project with frozen tracks can also
be transferred from your main computer and run easily on one with
less-than-optimal CPU specs.

• Plug-In Delay Compensation automatically delays tracks to compensate
for latencies caused by effects and plug-ins, including those on the
return tracks. In addition, both audio and MIDI tracks have a manual
delay setting to compensate for human, acoustic, hardware and other
real-world delays.

• Launchable Arrangement Locators offer arrangement/song-position
markers with MIDI mapping and quantized recall. Using the mouse,
computer keys or MIDI messages, you can drop locators on the fly during
playback or recording. Each locator can be named and assigned to a
computer key or MIDI message. Jumping to a locator is subject to
real-time quantization, just like launching Session View clips and
scenes. Previous/Next buttons allow you to jump from locator to locator.

• Mackie Control Support enables full implementation of compatible mixer
surfaces such as Tascam’s FW-1082/1884, Yamaha’s 01X and Mackie Control,
allowing for mouse-free program operation. Easily navigate arrangements
and the Session View grid; launch clips, scenes and locators; and access
instruments and effects.

Get ready to remix! Live 5 ships with a host of new remix-minded
features, assuring instant remix and mash-up gratification.

• MP3 support makes your entire music library available for use in Live.

• Automatic Tempo-Matching tracks the tempo of imported songs and sets
Warp Markers for you—instantly synchronizing your files to the project
tempo.

• Complex Warp Mode is a frequency-domain warping method specifically
designed to accommodate composite signals such as mixed-down music.

• New Clip Transport allows for performance-enhancing looping, editing
and shuffling on the fly for any clip in Live. Click anywhere in a
waveform to jump there—in sync and subject to real-time quantization.

Never lose ideas again! Live 5 features simple tools for saving,
previewing and accessing any idea on your hard drive.

• Live Clips. Clips can now be exported to disk for easy retrieval and
reuse in any project. The exported Live Clip not only retains MIDI,
audio, envelopes, warping and other clip settings but also the
associated instrument, effects and plug-ins. In Live’s Browser, Live
Clips are as easy to browse and preview as samples.

• Better Browsing. Live's built-in Browser now features a search field
and standard file organization capabilities such as creating folders and
dragging files into folders. In the Browser, Live Sets (.als files) can
be “unfolded” to reveal their tracks and clips—which can then be
selectively previewed and dragged in. It is also possible to drag a Live
Set from the Browser into the currently open Set to merge the two.

• New Preset Management. Presets for Ableton instruments and effects are
now managed through the Browser as well. You can organize presets in
folders at will and search for presets across folders using the search
field. A new “browse” button on every device temporarily links the
Browser to the device, allowing for easy preset recall.

• Device Groups allow you to save powerful multi-effect creations,
effectively adding all the capabilities of Ableton’s MIDI and audio
effects to Simpler, Impulse and Operator presets.

Live 5 introduces a selection of innovative new effects, bringing even
more creative possibilities.

• Beat Repeat - An inspirational, expressive and addictive audio effect
useful for subtle-to-extreme reorganization of beats and vocals. Create
short loops on the fly and control their lengths either manually or via
random functions for endless variations of grooves and stutter effects.

• Phaser and Flanger – These are both modeled after popular ‘70s guitar
effects and augmented with a beat-synced LFO (with variable waveforms)
and a unique envelope follower function. Results range from classic
phasing and flanging to drastic sound manipulation.

• Auto Pan - Offers LFO-driven manipulation of amplitude and panning. It
can create everything from automatic panning with various curves to
tremolo and amplitude modulation and beat-synchronized chopping effects.

• Saturator – Add dirt, punch or warmth to your sound with five
different shapes and a set of powerful tone controls for creating
subtle-to-drastic distortion effects.

• Arpeggiator – Offers all the classic arpeggiator applications and
more—strum notes like a guitarist, morph velocities and create
scale-corrected pitch progressions.

Other new Live 5 features:

Count-in recording
Right-click context menus
Change settings in multiple clips at once
Resize tracks in Session View
VST MIDI effect support
New Live Clips sound library
New preset library for Live devices
New and improved Live 5 lessons
Simpler now includes independent envelopes for filter, pitch and more.

Party Ben and his "famous" mash-up "Boulevard of Broken Songs" got a killer write-up today in the SF Chronicle. There is a GIANT pic of his face on the front page of the Arts/Entertainment section. Great props to him and the song. AND there is even a mention of the May Bootie. :-)

Bowie Mash Up

A while back david Bowie had a contest where he wanted peopel to mashup two of his songs so they could reuse the winners mash up in a car ad or to sell piumple cream. The rule was you had to use at least two songs and one of them had to be off his newest album. I decided it was even better to try to mash up as many david Bowie songs as humanly possible. I submitted two pieces neither of which won or got recognized because you can't dance to them and then of course the second one was just too damn scarey - oh well!
Champagne Jam (2004)

"An epic 23 minute mash-up-mix by San Francisco-based Audiosports - under the controls of designer and musician Alberto Forero. Utilising over a hundred samples, featuring everyone from Fela to Mazzy Star, Stereolab to Doug E. Fresh, Alberto has created a steadily progressive mix of downhouse club noodling to indie anthem reworkings. In the best possible way, this sounds like the first ever Indie-Workout track. Alberto would love to hear your thoughts, so check out his site too, and go see him play in San Francisco"

So we just found out that Le Tigre is actually hosting the mash-up we made on their official band website! It's our Decepti-Freak-On (Missy Elliott vs Le Tigre). It is listed at the top of their main page that opens up, and at the top
of the news section!

As big Le Tigre fans we're excited and honored. We can't believe one of the artists we mashed is actually hosting the track themselves! Crazy.

Adrian and D - the best of the bay

Adrian and Mysterious D have done it again - they are featured in the SF Weekly, this time as part of the 'Best of the Bay' issue. They've been picked as the "Best Alternaqueer Club Night Promoters".

The blurb mentions Bootie, Guilty, and Smashed. Brilliant. Personally, I would have left out the "Alternaqueer" and just annouced them as "Best Club Promoters", but that might have caused some friction with the Future Primitive crowd. Plus, the Weekly likes those descriptive titles.

Congats to Adrian and D for more sweet media coverage. And they didn't even get bashed by Z-Trip this time.

Check it out here: http://www.bestofthebay.com/2004/nightlife.html

I'd love to get some giant mash-up library going. Maybe we could start a little site list here.

Some of mine are available right here.

All Hail The Bootie! (April 14th 2004)

Well, Wednesday April 14th was my birthday. So what do I do...I grab a bunch of people from Santa Cruz and go to this party called Bootie...i've never had more fun at a club ever. The vibe is amazing! Adrian and D and Ben n Mike(? sorry if i forgot your name...)Threw done killer tunes! The best part of the night was getting the show rollin with The Riders On The Storm VS Rapture (again Hazy, but i think that was it) with a nice mash-up lipsync thing...and then Milkshake VS Ghostbusters was of the hook too! I almost died right then! But for the price of admission and the cost of drinks ($8 for a PINT of Vodka n Red Bull) I was quite pleased with the whole scene. Big Props To Adrian and D. Thank you for making something new and good!

DJ Tripp

p.s. They played some of my mash-ups too. Aren't they swell?
